My journey into the field of Health & Wellness began while pursuing my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at Florida International University. See, I have a curious mind that drives me to observe how individuals interact with their environment driven by their thoughts, beliefs, goals, fears and experiences, and the extent to which these shaping processes and events play a role in their current predicaments.
But a couple of years after finishing my Bachelor’s, I realized that in order to truly help others I still had to learn another important piece of the puzzle – the physical aspect of health. Granted, I had more than a little push from life as my own health took an unexpected turn.
During my teens and early twenties, I didn’t care about nutrition or taking care of my health. My young adulthood was characteristically filled with sleepless party nights (and the life saving NSAIDs the following days); fast-food, birth control, antibiotics (for the repetitive UTIs and chronic infections), followed by less than ideal habits as means of coping with the stress of studying and working full-time. Yet, on the outside, I still “looked good”.
While my friends used to complain about being on X or Y diet, I took pride in never having to diet and still maintaining a good figure. That word (diet) alone revolted my stomach.
Until it was no longer the mere utterance of the world that figuratively upset my digestion. It was an actual physiological reaction – all the years of questionable lifestyle choices culminated into a “where-did-this come-from?” imposing journey.
In retrospect, I should’ve seen it coming. The following years were plagued with symptoms ranging from severe itching, yeast infections, UTIs and abscesses to chest pain, palpitations, anxiety, digestive issues, body pains and brain fog. I remember one doctor literally telling me there was nothing else he could do for me – he would have refer me to Psychiatrist (how cliche of him). Thankfully, I knew better.
Because life works in mysterious ways and we often attract exactly what we need at a particular time, I met someone on an idle Saturday afternoon that referred me to an alternative practitioner. I was desperate, and alternative to what I had been experiencing sounded like exactly what I needed. And it was.
With lifestyle changes and dietary modifications, I was able to improve significantly from my laundry list of symptoms.
That’s when I grasped the importance of these interventions and how deeply they can impact our health. Eating a balanced diet is not only about looking a certain way; it’s about fostering health. I realized that I held the power all along, not the doctors. I could do something to improve my own situation. And from that moment on, I was eager to help others do the same and that’s when I decided to pursue a Master’s in Nutrition at the University of Miami.
While it has been a long journey, I can honestly say that one of the most powerful lessons one can learn from challenging times is that they often come as a loud, obnoxious reminder. A reminder that you have a purpose in life that you may not be fulfilling; that you are taking this sacred body of yours for granted; that you need to be nudged in another direction in order to avoid a greater misfortune; and that life will scream louder if you refuse to pay attention to the occasional whispers.
If you are frustrated with a health system that offers bandaid solutions through prescriptions and unnecessary procedures; if you’ve had it with the quick fixes promoted by our culture as means of getting what you want in no time, but at a high cost; if you’re tired of the empty promises you’ve made to yourself about the changes you need to make, yet never seem to follow through. Let that rage metamorphose into action.
If life has finally caught your attention and you are ready to make the necessary changes to feel more energized, empowered, confident, lose the weight, the guilt, the pain, and even the meds – I’d be honored to share that journey with you.
Together we can get to the root of your high cholesterol, high blood pressure, painful periods, sugar cravings, weight gain, metabolic issues, mood swings, fatigue, brain fog and digestive issues. With the use of basic and cutting edge laboratory tests to detect imbalances, targeted supplementation (when needed) to rebalance your body and, most importantly, dietary and lifestyle changes, we can get you from where you are to where you want to be.
I hope you’ll give me the honor of facilitating the awakening of your energetic, lively, and vibrant self.
